Fine-resolution maps of irrigation practices are important for accurately quantifying water use and withdrawals. Here, we will present a suite of high-resolution irrigation datasets for the United States spanning the 1990s to the present, including maps of irrigation status, technologies, and efficiencies. These products were developed in coordination with USGS by integrating publicly available satellite observations and environmental data using automated machine learning frameworks implemented on cloud computing platforms. The resulting datasets (irrigation maps, field boundaries, ground reference) and the underlying mapping tools provide unprecedented opportunities to monitor irrigation changes, improve irrigation water use estimation, and assess the societal and environmental impacts of irrigation from local to national scales.
