Presented by: Chris Gazoorian, Supervisory Hydrologist, USGS New York Water Science Center
There is great potential for Uncrewed Aircraft Systems (UAS/ drones) to enhance USGS Water Science. This seminar will present steps to establishing and maintaining a proficient UAS capability within Water Science Centers, the current fleet of UASs available to Centers through the Department of Interior’s Office of Aviation Services, and how UAS are currently being utilized for water science by the USGS. Multiple UAS use cases for streamgaging, high-resolution imagery collection, and terrain mapping for hydrologic features will be discussed in detail. Some examples include steam surface velocity measurements, reach length mapping, and detection of groundwater – surface water exchange zones. A variety of sensors will be explored, such as visible light cameras, thermal infrared and multispectral imagery sensors, lidar and radar.
