The future of water resource management was on full display earlier this month at the 2026 UCOWR/NIWR Annual Water Resources Conference in San Antonio, Texas. Held from June 8–10 along the historic Riverwalk, the event brought together leading researchers, educators, and water experts from across the globe.

Among the attendees were 13 exceptional student researchers who received competitive travel awards from the National Institutes for Water Resources (NIWR) to attend and participate in the conference.

What set this group apart was its incredible geographic reach, bridging insights from every corner of the country. All seven NIWR regions—the Great Lakes, Great Plains, Mid-Atlantic, Powell Consortium, South Atlantic/Gulf, Oceania & Islands, and Pacific Northwest—were represented. From mapping local groundwater health to modeling massive climate shifts, these students brought diverse regional expertise and fresh problem-solving to the national conversation.

The conference provided these emerging professionals with an invaluable platform to accelerate their careers. For most of the awardees, the experience centered on two core opportunities:

  • Sharing Vital Research: The students stepped up to the microphone to present their abstracts during technical sessions. They fielded questions from veteran scientists and received constructive feedback to help advance their graduate and doctoral work.

  • Building Professional Bridges: Beyond the lecture halls, the students participated in dedicated networking events, panel discussions, and technical field trips. They connected with potential mentors, met future employers, and shared ideas with fellow peers facing similar water management hurdles across the country.

By investing in these 13 student travelers, NIWR is doing more than just funding a trip—it is actively cultivating the next generation of leadership capable of solving our most complex, transdisciplinary water challenges.

Congratulations to all of the 2026 NIWR Student Travel Award recipients!
